Plastic Busters will organize, on Friday June 12th (from 8.30 am to 10.30 am) a IUCN WCC campus session. This 2-hour event can already be seen in the conference web-site.
This hands-on and highly interactive campus session will train young participants (35 years of age and under) on how to assess the presence and impacts of marine litter in pelagic and coastal marine protected areas and on how to identify targeted mitigation actions towards safeguarding habitats, species and ecosystem services.
The session will provide participants with an overview of cutting edge methodologies for monitoring marine litter and will train them on how to assess its presence and impact in selected marine matrices, including biota. Participants will get familiarized with global mitigation strategies and have the opportunity to collectively identify and shortlist tailor-made measures to address the problem in marine protected areas. To this end a set of distinguished scientists and young researchers will utilize the Plastic Busters MPAs initiative as a concrete showcase towards safeguarding natural ecosystems in marine protected areas by defining and implementing an integrated approach.
